The
demise of Prof. Wangari Maathai saw
Kenya and the world at large lose an environmental hero. The gap left by the
late professor has not yet been refilled as most of the environmentalists today
are out either to make money or earn fame in crooked ways. It is amazing to see
that environmentalists get into politics not to use their positions to promote
environmental stewardship, but to use their positions to go against the
environment.
What would you say if you heard a former environmentalist got into politics, grabbed a piece of land, and constructed rental houses?
What would you say if you heard a former environmentalist got into politics, grabbed a piece of land, and constructed rental houses?
I
am not trying to say that houses should not be constructed. I understand that
the worlds’ population is expanding day in day out. But then, are we going to
forgo the ecosystem services we enjoy from mother nature just because we want
to top the world charts on rich men and women, who owns Kenya and so on? How
forgetful is the human race? Do we not remember that the late professor risked
being jailed for life just because of a sixty storey building construction that
was to take place at Uhuru
Park grounds and she stood to oppose the proposal? Do you even not remember
that the late professor opted to be cremated just to save that one tree that me
and you are cutting down today for timber, charcoal and many other endless
needs of ours?
The
environment is there to help humans improve their lifestyle though this is
subject to proper use of it. The more better you conserve the environment, the
more benefits you reap from it. Do you think I am lying? Is Kenya not running
into huge loses that are as a result of poaching? Tourism has earned our
country billions in terms of foreign cash. Again, as much as we enjoy the use
of resources from our environment, we would love the generations that are to
come after us to enjoy the same. This means, our priorities have to be right. Instead
of exploiting everything to completion, we can also go for alternatives!
Finally,
I devote myself to giving my environment the best, so that I can get the best
in return. Lets join hands in preaching this gospel on environmental
stewardship. God bless you. God bless Kenya. Thanks!
